Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th Century and was originally used to rehabilitate injured soldiers in Europe during World War I.  Joseph Pilates later worked with the New York City Ballet, and it was this relationship that propelled Pilates’ popularity in the US.  Pilates focuses on proper bio-mechanics and core strength, both of which are key elements in the power, stability, and flexibility of the muscles and joints.  Pilates also integrates focused breathing and fluid movement, awakening the body’s energetic system and promoting the body’s self-healing properties.
Benefits of Pilates include improved posture and trunk stability, increased flexibility and overall muscle tone, alleviation of back pain, prevention and rehabilitation of injuries, and stress reduction.
